Answers:
Although Dizzy Gillespie wrote it in 1942 while playing with the Earl "Fatha" Hines Band, it was not popular until long after its inaugural recording on 31 December 1944 in NYC, which was also 20-year-old Sarah Vaughan's first recording session as a lead entertainer (her first studio work was with Billy Eckstine on 5 Dec 44), when it was known as "Interlude" (with lyrics by Frank Paparelli and Raymond Leveen) and performed by Vaughan, Gillespie (pianist & trumpeter), Aaron Sachs (clarinet), Georgie Auld (tenor sax), Jack Lesburg (bass), Morey Feld (drums), and Chuck Wayne (guitar)!. Critic Leonard Feather was the producer, for the Continental label!. It appeared on Remington REP-35 (an Extended Play 45 rpm, released c!. 1951), and was transferred to a 33 rpm LP (Remington RJ-500, released c!. 1952)!.

Soon the popularity of "A Night in Tunisia" was established by Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers, who recorded it for their album "A Night at Birdland," Vol!. 1, in 1954, and became closely identified with it because of a highly percussive treatment by their horn section!. Blakey introduces the piece in the liner notes with the (probably apocryphal) story of how he was present when Dizzy composed it "on the bottom of a garbage can!. The Texas department of sanitation can take a low bow!."

In sum, A Night in Tunisia was not popularly known prior to the early 1950s, and was not a jazz standard until the mid-1950s!. According to my father, an old jazz band leader and composer, A Night in Tunisia did not become popular until 1960!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
