Don't know much about the Apples, I've only got their latest release New Magnetic Wonder!. I like Same Old Drag and Sunndal Song!. Nice video (hint: Energy is downloadable free right now off the amazon!.com page for New Magnetic Wonder)!.
Neutral Milk Hotel are my favourite band ever, at the moment i'm obsessed with Naomi, A Baby For Pree, Two Headed Boy and Everything Is!.
My other favourite E6 bands are the Olivia Tremor Control, Elf Power, Of Montreal and Beulah (you should check out Elf Power or especially Beulah if you like the Apples)!.
