Who's the most influencial bands from the 1980's?!

Question: Who's the most influencial bands from the 1980's!?
Answers:
Hm!. This asks for multiple answers to multiple categories!.!.!.

Mainstream rock: U2 (set the standard for bands for decades: Coldplay, Keane, early (I said EARLY) Radiohead)
British indie music: The Smiths
Rock/ metal: Van Halen (paved the way for Guns n Roses, Whitesnake, etc!.)
Metal: Metallica (nuff said)
Crossover between rock, funk and dance: Prince
Crossover between rock and dance: Joy Division (based on 1980s Closer, though technically they existed longer in the 1970s than in the 1980s)
Mainstream pop (man): Michael Jackson (look at & listen to Justin Timberlake and many boy bands)
Mainstream pop (woman): a league of her own!. The Queen of Pop 1980s-2000s!.

Yes, people will say I have forgotten bands!. But I think it is quite a comprehensive little listWww@Enter-QA@Com

Technically, Nirvana was from the late '80s, though I would contend that their influence doesn't go much further than the death of Grunge soon after the Cobain's own death!. Actually, Green River, Mudhoney and other Seattle bands influenced Nirvana, so they're probably more influential for grunge!.
Guided by Voices, The Pixies, Mission of Burma, and Siouxsie and the Banshees were all very influential in their own right!.
The Dead Kennedy's and The Misfits were part of that second wave of punk that became influential for later bands who successfully commercialized and destroyed punk rock (think most of the pop-punk you hear today)!.
Bands like Rites of Spring were key to the post-hardcore emo movement of the late '80s, and through various forms of corruption and commercial influence the 'emo' (pop-punk) bands of today stole the term emo and applied it unfairly to their own music, with loose (at best) influences from the true emo bands!.

However, I'd say Sonic Youth was probably one of the most influential bands of the '80s!. Their various experimental projects formed the basis for much of the post-punk scene and has had a profound impact on indie music to this day!. Of course, Thurston Moore was himself influenced by the No Wave scene going on in New York during the late '70s, in reaction to the commercialized New Wave sound that was prevalent, and the resultant death of true punk in '77 or so at the hands of commercialization!.

I mean!.!.!.I know stuff about music, I think!? I'm interested to see what everyone else says, though!.

*Note: I took "influential" to mean bands which influenced music today, though the band itself may not have lasted very long!.

*Edit: Oh yeah, I forgot about most of the Brits!. The Smiths were decidedly influential, but I'd say Pulp was also decidedly a huge influence on the Britpop scene!. also, The Cure were important, and Joy Division and the rest of the Madchester scene (Happy Mondays, New Order) were significant as well!.

also, Metallica, Iron Maiden, and U2 are still around because they AREN'T real bands!. They're commercial, intent on making money and devoid of artistic credibility!. Seriously!.!.!.have you seen Metallica's movie "Some Kind of Monster!?" It's about them going to band therapy!. Their old bassist quit because he realized how stupid that is!.!.!.no self-respecting or significant metal band (or any band, for that matter) goes to therapy!. Their label made them do it because they were afraid they'd stop making money!. Indie Rock is the true measure of influence, because it's by the underground bands that commercial bands are influenced, using the creativity of real, innovative bands to make money after diluting the creativity to appeal to a larger audience!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I think Run-DMC!. Before they did "WALK THIS WAY" with Aerosmith no-one else did a rock rap colabrations!. Now it happens all the time all thanx to them !. They started something really cool, like a trend!. Now if you listen to a song like Numb by linkin park, it was a great song (like Walk This Way the original) but when Jay-Z and Linkin Park redid it it was cooler!. Www@Enter-QA@Com
