Answers:
1!. your viola is probably too big!. that happened to one of my friends this past summer!. she just had people massage her shoulder!.!.!. it was getting better when i last saw her!. maybe go shopping for a smaller one!? bein and fushi in Chicago have some AMAZING instruments!.
2!. you should probably check up on the "Alexander technique", just google it!.
3!. don't play MUCH if it hurts!. just do little practice spots!. like 5-10 minutes at a time!. you don't want to permanently damage your neck/shoulder!.
4!. talk to your teacher about it!. they could alter your position to make playing feel more natural!.

hope this helps!Www@Enter-QA@Com

A word of caution!

Pain is a signal that something's not right!. It sounds to me like you might have a "pinched nerve!." It can happen around the neck area!. I recall waking up years ago, once or twice, and couldn't move my head to turn fully from side to side!. The best advice is to ease up, slow down, don't push the envelope, as they say, and it will clear up in several days or so!.

In your neck area, a very good treatment to do is a warm, not too hot shower and let the spray fall on the troubled spot for about 10 or 15 minutes!. The heat will increase circulation to the area and give you a bit more freedom of movement afterwards you'll notice, but don't overdo anything that will cause strain!.

Hope this helps!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
