Under what conditions is a band allowed to cite another band/artist as their !

Question: Under what conditions is a band allowed to cite another band/artist as their 'influence' (in your opinion)!?
Reading about MCR's influences the other day got me thinking; they cite Queen as one of their main influences!. However, I don't hear it at all!. Not even a little bit!. Is it just me!?

What does it take for a band to call another band their influence!? Should the members of the band just be big fans of theirs!? Or should the resemblance truly be audible in their music!?

Please share your thoughts on the subject, and answer the following BQs!.!.What is :
a) a band you like that has influenced your favorite band !?
b) a band you like that was influenced by your favorite band !?

And there I was bemoaning the lack of interesting questions! :)

Well, 'influence' covers a broad spectrum!. It can be musical in reference to a particular style or sound, or it can be an image, or an ethos, or path of belief, etc!.!.!.

I think it is up to the band or artist as to how they choose to exhibit their influences!. While it can be nice to hear occasional hints in their music, I mostly want to hear themselves in the music! You have the same issues with image influences : where do you draw the line between influence and admiration, and homage and tribute!?

I have a sort-of answer to your bonus Q's!.
As you know, 5 of my favourite bands & artists are :
Fleetwood Mac ; Blackmore's Night ; Jethro Tull ; Stevie Nicks ; Mike Oldfield!.

Blackmore's Night lead singer Candice cites some of her favourites as being Fleetwood Mac / Stevie Nicks / Buckingham Nicks, and singer Maggie Reilly {who sang for Mike Oldfield}!. They have also worked with Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull, and covered a JT song!.

You can see image similarities between Candice and Stevie, though Candice's image is really supposed to have a medieval / Renaissance basis, whereas Stevie was going just for etherial!.

Music wise, they and Jethro Tull have some cross-over in the same areas of genre, and Candice's lyrics have a certain resemblance to Stevie's, whilst still being very much her own!. Www@Enter-QA@Com

Hey Hedzy!!!!

Queen influenced MCR!? Seriously!? I thought they were influenced by punk!. Or at least all the little fan girls kept saying that!. I bet Freddie is rolling over in his grave!

Perhaps when an artist says they were influenced by a certain band they don't always mean they emulate the sound but that the band influenced them and made them want to get into the music industry!. Too bad MCR wasn't influenced by ditch diggers huh!? The world doesn't have enough ditches!.

I remember seeing an interview wit Axl Rose saying he was influenced by Queen!. Perhaps the more theatrical songs on Use Your Illusions 1&2 were because of that!. Www@Enter-QA@Com

With regards to MCR & Queen, the only similarity I heard was the *approach*!. But DEF' Not the sound!. Both leaned towards a bombastic attitude!.

But that's it!.

My gut reaction is that the band doesn't *have* to sound like their influence(s)!. Lotsa times, a band has Many!. But it makes it easier to "get" if you can hear a similar sound!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Really, I don't think you have to hear the resemblance!. tons of musicians have been influenced by artists that they have nothing in common with!. It may not even be the sound that influenced them

BQ:
a!.David Bowie influenced Morrissey
b!. Morrissey has influenced a lot of bands!.!.!.!. but i cant stand most of themWww@Enter-QA@Com

I think a lot of people confuse 'influence' with 'fan'!. If you're influenced I think people should be able to notice it!.

BQ
a!. Still Remains
b!. A Bullet For Pretty Boy

(The band being The Devil Wears Prada)

Edit: I retract my statement!. It doesn't have to be just in the sound!. They can be influenced lyrically, thus being hard to notice!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

BQ's aside!.!.!.!.!.

!.!.!.a band should be able to name a band as an influence whenever they damn well please!.!.!.!.

!.!.!.if you can hear the influence, that's not necessarily a good thing, it means that band is copying more than being original!.!.!.which should be every band's goal!.!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

A) The beatles and Pixies influenced Nirvana!.
B) Nirvana have influenced lots of bands, Puddle of Mud come to mind though!. Obviously they influenced the Foo fighters! Www@Enter-QA@Com

good question!. well its difficult to see the influence of some artists on others!. then it may just be a case that theyre a huge fan or sth!. Nirvana's post punk influences were pretty clear!. AIC's Sabbath influence was clear and so on!. but smashing pumpkins named pink floyd as an influence!. pink floyd is unique so the similarities arent obvious but the progressive nature of some of SP's work is derived from PF somewhat!. maybe just the fact that PF inspired them to try to be progressive in their music!. a band may be influenced by another band's live act and look (Lizzy Borden and Alice Cooper) or by their lyrical content (Iron Maiden and Iced Earth)!. not always audible i guess!.

a- Queensryche (apparently one of Cantrell's main influences)
b- Smashing Pumpkins (influenced by My Bloody Valentine) (both are faves so!.!.)

Hey HedZy!

I don't think there are any rules as to whether or not a band is allowed to cite another as an influence!. If said rock band claims that someone influenced them, who are we to not believe them!? This doesn't mean that just because a band cites another as an influence are we to expect them to be as good or as talented as the alleged inspiration!.

As for the MCR thing, listen to Welcome to the Black Parade (and hopefully not on a full stomach) and then compare it to Queen performing Bohemian Rhapsody!. It's hard to completely ignore the similarities!. Both songs are over the top and theatrical!. The difference is that Queen was original while MCR is a mish mash of every genre under the sun, leaving you with a steaming pile of you-know-what!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
