Why do some people think that getting music for free is okay?!

Question: Why do some people think that getting music for free is okay!?
Essentially, I am sick of seeing questions from people who don't want to pay for their music!. As sick as the music industry is, it certainly will not get any better with the exchange of free files!. If I could mow lawns and do odd jobs at the age of 10 to purchase an album or a single, why is it that people, mostly younger, seem to see free music as an "entitlement"!?

Someone explain to me why getting an artist's work for free is acceptable!.

In the interest of full disclosure, I did the Napster thing when it was first going on until it got controversial!. I get up on my high horse about it, but I was someone who downloaded stuff when I was younger!. What happened though was the realization that it hurts the indie labels and small artists!. I don't really care about Metallica and I don't really care about Justin Timberlake, they're getting theirs, but thinking of that group that may have gotten a little bump in their name recognition, but they havent gotten a safer deal yet!. Now nobody has to pay for their stuff and it sucks!. Plus, when I did it, it wasn't at all the only way that people seem to!. I used it as a reference!. I'd download one or two songs and see if I wanted to buy stuff!. I do the same thing now, only I pay $!.99 for those tracks (a small price to pay to get a taste of a new interesting band(, and I feel better about it because at least some money is going into the system!. With the emergence of the iTunes store, there really is no excuse!.

The one thing I do miss from those sites is the rarities that you just cannot find!. Weird little live things, out of print B-Sides that practically don't exist anymore!. Once again though, small price to pay!. It sucks that there is the percentage of people out there who simply don't pay for music anymore!.

I'm sick of it too!. I actually got my first violation for telling one of the people who asked that queston to get a job!.

also, radio is different because it's an advertising tool!. It's how people find out about new music!. These are companies that have agreements, and advertisers pay the radio stations and everyone gets paid!. Hell, now a days, the conglomerates who own the record companies own radio stations too!. Everyone is in bed together!.

Lyndey C!. You've obviously never made a record or been a touring musician!. I had a roommate who toured with a band as part of his job to record their shows (a pretty successful band all in all), trust me it's by no means glamerous!. I think most people who casually wish they were rock stars have no idea what they are asking for!. I agree that those jobs you mentioned are underpaid for what they do, but you have no idea what you're talking about!. Your ignorant, and all too cliche, bravado is dually noted though!.

also, it's a total cop out and a ridiculous logic!. Do you just steal things from the store because you feel underpaid!? Because you're entitled to it!?

As for the notion that free downloads are the same as borrowing a record from a friend, it is an interesting point, but it is built on a fallacy!. The fact is that you share a record with a buddy or family member that you think might like it, and that is one thing!. Look at it as a circle of influence!. Well, when you post something on the internet or download it from there that circle of influence becomes exponentially larger!. I don't know what single file as a root has been downloaded the most, but it is more than just theoretical that one file through trading, hell even at it's root could spawn thousands of downloads!. Thus if it's a record, it could potentially be thousands of people not buying that record where maybe your buddy copies your cd and one or two people don't buy it!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Because to charge £10 for a CD is nuts considering it would cost maybe 20p for the record company to reproduce!. Music is about expression (well most music) but in this modern world people find a way to completely commercialise it and by charging so much for a chart CD they did pretty well!.!.!.

Buying albums is much more rewarding, agreed, but I normally download it and if I like it I buy it!. If not I tend to delete it, that way I'm not wasting money on something I'll never listen to!.

And of course I consider the work put in to the album but I've seen Metallica (my favourite band) CDs for £18, and they're not new releases, they are 20 odd years old!. They are multi millionaires, I'm sure, and any more money would just be greedy to be honest!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

If some ***hole is trying to sell an ultra rare album for $1,500 on Ebay, but I can get it free from an album blog, excuse Me for getting it free!.

And if I buy the aforesaid ultra rare album from the aforesaid ***hole on Ebay, the obscure Artist won't see one penny anyway, so excuse Me for not feeling guilty at all while I get it free!.

That's the ONLY way I get free music btw!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

In the uk it was recorded that cd sales were down but the price of cds was at something stupid like £14-£17 for some albums!.

This was a few years ago, shops asked the consumer why were they downloading and most said it was because of the price of CDs being completely stupid!.

So the shops lowered prices of cds, wa hey cd sales went back up and illegal downloads fell!.

Of course not everyone is going to buy cds, when you can get them so easily for free!. I just think the company's don't help themselves by putting stupid prices on cds!.

I remember looking for a muse cd that had been out for a good 5 years, check 4 shops, the cheapest i found it was £16!.50(this was 2 years ago) and even on the net it was high!. Whos going to pay that sort of money for a 10 track cd!?

I've started downloading cd's again, only because i refuse to spend 9-13 quid for a cd that has the chance of being ****!. So i download them first, if i like them i buy them if i don't well i don't!.

Free music is not okay, unless you have the artists specific approval!.

Downloading is a far too easy way of getting music - No getting off your ***, no charge, it beats going down to get a CD, especially for the teens who see all their friends do it and think it is okay!. It might even seem to be an easier format to listen to (on their pc)!.

I don't understand it either!. People will spend 20 dollars on a dvd to give them 2 hours of enjoyment instead of paying 12 dollars for an album which they would cherish and listen to for a long time, because let's be honest, not many movies are worthy of watching over, and over, and over again, but I could listen to MoP, Van Halen I, and any Floyd album over and over again!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

are you a friend of lars by chance!?

somewhere someone HAD to have purchased that music so if i download from them via a shareware site oh well too bad so sad eh!? how many of us have let friends, relatives, etc!., borrow a cd, cassette, album or whatever!. sometimes these people would copy the music for their own use!. how is this any different!? how much music have you borrowed in this same manner and then copied what you liked for FREE!?

btw for the somewhat exhorbitant prices i've paid for concert tickets and my share of music and band swag in my lifetime, getting a little for free here and there is not a big deal imo!. Www@Enter-QA@Com

do you think radio stations shouldn't be allowed to play music for free as well!?

i download songs for free because i don't want to pay £15 for something that sucks!. if i like an album i normally buy it anyway!. i've discovered loads of bands by downloading a couple of tracks and liking them so much i bought the album!.

as long as cd's and movies are priced so highly there will always be people who will download them for freeWww@Enter-QA@Com

As far as I'm concerned, getting music for free IS okay!.!.!.as long as the artist approves!. There are site such as MySpace and PureVolume, where the artist enables others to download for free!. Other than that, it is stealing!.

EDIT: Oh, well then there goes my answer, ha!. I guess that some people, given the opportunity to get something for free, will take it!. Even if it means stealing from someone else!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

The same reason people don't pay at those office snack funds!. Free riders!. And those of us who do the right thing end up paying more to cover for the thieves!.

I personally still buy CDs, in hopes that the artist, pleased that he no longer has to wait tables, will make another album!.

And $20 for a CD!? Where y'all shop at!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

People are self-centered and they want the most for the least!. This applies to EVERY aspect of life, including music!. When they download music, they don't take into account the fact that it costs money to make music and that musicians make music in order to make a profit!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I know what your saying, and i think your right!. That people shouldn't download free music!. But i guess people with out jobs or kids just do it because its free!.!.!. I think they don't think about what could happen to the artist or whats problems it could cause!. Thats just an idea!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Because society todays is greedy!.

They want more for less, and expect alot for free!.

This is society!.

But at the same time, the artists have PLENTY of money!.!.!. an over abundance you could say!.!.!. they've recieved more than enough compensations for sharing their gift with us!.

And by the way, a true artist doesn't work for the money!.!.!. they work for the love of art!.!.!.!.!. payment is just a bonus!.

:-)Www@Enter-QA@Com

I somewhat agree with your point of view,BUT!.!.!.!.when a school teacher, fireman, nurse, and police officer start getting paid what they/We should!.!.!.!.!.I'll consider paying a rock band for a cd for their "hard-earned-work"

Kthanksbye!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

i always go see the bands i like when they come to town, and usually end up buying some merch from them!.
everybody knows bands make most of their money off touring and merch anyway!.!.!.
or atleast i thought everybody knew that!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

some people like free music because its like saying what the point at least i am getting free music they dont care because your downloading them from ppl and even thought it illegal they dont care because some ppl dont careWww@Enter-QA@Com

If they hadn't have started charging us stupid prices for an album, maybe more people wouldn't have decided to start downloading!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

for the same reason record companies feel that charging 20 bucks for a CD is okayWww@Enter-QA@Com

It's not, that is why it is illegal!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
