In sales, the top male artist would be Michael Jackson!. His album Thriller was the best selling album of the decade!.
The top female artist would be Madonna!. There is no other female singer that comes close to her sales in that decade!.
Combining critical acclaim and sales, it had to be Prince!. His albums in that decade (not only Purple Rain, but also 1999, Parade and especially Sign o The Times) still influence artists these days (just listen to the likes of Outkast, MGMT or Beck)!.
The top band would be U2!. Starting off strong with several albums, accumulating to The Joshua Tree that made them especially big in the USA, they seemed to have vanished off the earth until they came back with Achtung Baby at the end of the last year of the 1980s!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Michael Jackson had the biggest sales for one album, but there were several groups on top in the 80's, like DURAN DURAN, U2, JOURNEY, BON JOVI, DEF LEPPARD, ZZTOP, just to name a few!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
