If your vocal teacher says that, then you should take his/her word for it!. You find out your vocal range by having someone learned in vocal technique hear you sing; usually, they have you do some vocal exercises for them, seeing where your voice seems to feel/sound the most comfortable!. A lot of sopranos who have yet to discover their upper range will be placed as a second soprano!.
The most common classifications are:
Soprano (often broken down into Sop!. 1 & 2 for choral things)
Alto (sometimes Alto 1 & 2)
Tenor (sometimes Tenor 1 & 2)
Baritone
