A decent computer (i built mine myself and saved a lot of dough)!.!.!. that along with a decent DAW will go a long way!.
I like 'Ableton Live', and i definitely recommend it, but I also recommend doing lots of research as your needs may be different than mine!.
And of course a microphone!.!.!. if u don't 'peak' when u record then i think you can pass on a compressor for now, because you can compress your stuff later if u wish
Maybe some additional sounds via a solid sample disk which can be found everywhere there are many makers !.!. look for reviews at places like http://www!.soundonsound!.com/

For $10 to $20, you can get a good small microphone (mine's Logitech) on Amazon!. You can hook it up to your computer!. Audacity is a good recording software!.
