Is Rock Music truly dead - now?!

Question: Is Rock Music truly dead - now!?
I have had one ear pressed to the radio for over 40 years and everything seems to be a rehash of something else!.

Is it time to demand more, and a more diversified play list from commercial radio stations and the music industry as a whole!?

For the past 15 years all they seem to play is the same safe, demographically-safe stuff!? Www@Enter-QA@Com

Answers:
Ignore commercial radio and go check out itunes radio, myspace bands and go see live music!.

Commercial radio has never been the place to find great new music!. It only plays what it thinks people already like, to generate advertising dollars!.

We live in a time of wonderful creativity and innovation!. The access to music from all over the world is actually creating more innovative hybrids (so called "new music") than we've seen before!.

If you're in USA, NPR plays some amazingly good music many would call "undiscovered"!. JJJ in Australia does the same thing, as it's not beholden to advertising dollars!.

As ever, it takes some digging to find great music, but there's more today than ever before thanks to the lowered costs of recording, and the aforementioned exposure to music from all over the world thanks in large part to the internet and transmigration!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

"Is it time to demand more, and a more diversified play list from commercial radio stations and the music industry as a whole!?"

This pretty much sounds like the same lament I've heard for the last thirty years!.

Radio play is based on advertising, advertising will always be based on demographics, thus radio play is based on demographics!. Demand away all you want, but if you aren't in the right demographic group, they won't listen!. If you are in the right demographic group they will listen to you!.

Even the periods where you think radio is more diverse, it is just responding to demographics!. That 15 year old golden age!? Lasted about three or four years when the radio people didn't have a clue as to what would sell and tried new things for a while!. It also followed a fifteen year dry spell where all the same bands were recording and were unheard outside of college radio, because they appealed to the wrong demographic!. That golden age only came when the boomlet babies were old enough to finally tear some air time away from the boomer preferred bands!.

If you're born in the trough get used to it!. It isn't just radio that'll ignore you it is most popular media!. Freaks and Geeks lasted a season, why!? It was nostalgia aimed at people who were born in mid-sixties, hardly a huge demographic group to target!. The Wonder Years!? It lasted six seasons, because the nostalgia appealed to a larger demographic!.

So get used to it, media hates small demographics and so do politicians, Trough babies will never have the hot button issue or the most favored demographic that the advertisers chase!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

its all about numbers, radio stations will only play music that will get them more listeners, that is why the only rock you will get on a radio stations is POP ROCK, other wise you have to find a rock radio station!. and that will add to the fact that most of rock made these days is crap!. people just want to sell!. if you want to find good rock music you need to search deeper, there are loads to good rock material out there!.
now is rock dead!? no way, in comparison to other music types rock has the longest life period, can you recall a pop song form 20 years a go, or when was the last time you heard the spice girls, you still how ever listen to pink Floyd metalleca aerosmith, iron maiden, and Even ledzeppelin!.
now we are talking about bands that have been around for at least 20 years, when did a pop band last for More than 5-8 years!. rock is not dead but it is not appreciated as it used to be, due to rubbish that is being made now days, bands went from quality to commercial and that is the problemWww@Enter-QA@Com

While popular radio maybe dead, Rock Music is far from dead!. Bands such as Nightwish, Leaves Eyes, and Edenbridge are as fresh as ever!. I think that with so many options available to get to music now, knowing how to navigate in the music world is an important a skill as it ever was!. Now it is not just the radio, but the internet that pushes new and creative sounds!. FM radio is not for the daring, it is to sell you cars, and they are less likely to want to push something different!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

It amuses me everytime I see this claim pop up!.!.!.it isn't dead, people just need to look a little harder and you'll find quality rock that isn't forumlaic and radio friendly!. There are plenty of great, different acts out there releasing great stuff!.!.!.!.and each genre and all that has rises and falls in terms of quality

Its true what you say though, radio is dominated by safe, bland and uninteresting crap which you will forget about in a years time, whilst the other unsung heroes continue to release their stuff to their fans without radio play that people still talk about many years later!. There are so much material thats left of mainstream that could and should get airplay such as Clutch!. Even some metal acts have class songs that would go down alright on radio!. Www@Enter-QA@Com

That's where your main problem lies!.!.!.!.the radio!.!.!.

Please turn it off and your best bet is youtube and myspace!.!.!.!.

That is the only way the underground bands get any publicity!.!.and that is where the best music lies!.

The radio plays the stuff that they know will get listens and the music labels get the 'musicians' who will sell rather then create or change music!.

Your 100% right, there is nothing new out on the airwaves!.!.!.all it is is the same song, performed by different people and edited by the same people who edit every other song!.

It's depressing but hang in there, your bound to find some good stuff soon enough if you search hard enough!Www@Enter-QA@Com

Rock is never dead, just sleeping!.
It happened during the 70!.s with disco, then again during the mid 90's!. Each time a new style came to the forefront and took over!. Hair bands were almost immediately replaced with grunge and alternative rock so it was a longer stretch then!.
Eventually people will get bored with the current trends and something interesting will hit from somewhere people least expect it!.
Or maybe im being optimistic and playing devils advocate!.
Just like there are only so many ways to tell the same story, there are only so many combinations of notes that can be played!. Www@Enter-QA@Com

no their are still good bands but they don't get Airplay on the radio because the Radio plays that pop rock disney engineered Jonas Brothers witch i wouldn't consider the least bit rock and atleast Yahoo Music puts them in the pop section

but Myspace bands like
The Minor League
Alucard
Egon's Unicat

those are some small bands no ones heard of

than you got the warped tours which have alot of good bands on it and also other bands im adding ot the list

Alkaline Trio
Reel Big Fish
Street Dogs
Against Me!
Black Tide
Less Than Jake
NOFX

and i need to sleep so im not going to finish this list but i think you get the pointWww@Enter-QA@Com

There are plenty of great bands out there right now--you just have to know where to look!.
1) The Rollings Stones magazine: That's how I found my current favorite band (Kings of Leon) quite a few years ago!. They'll write small sections describe new and upcoming bands!.

2) Google "bands similar to (your favorites)!." One of the links that search'll bring up will be a www!.last!.fm link--click on it, and it will show quite a few artists that are within the same musical realm that you listen to!.

3) www!.liveplasma!.com

4) This has already been mentioned, but--Myspace is a good way to find bands!.

And you made a great point, but I honestly don't see the radio stations changing their playlists anytime soon!. Most stations choose money over musical exploration!. And they -do- make money by playing whatever is popular at that moment, which seems to be bands like Fall Out Boy and The Jonas Brothers!. To make matters worse, they are encouraging this fixation with this pop-ish rock-ish!.!.!.music that just seems so fabricated---like it's purpose for existing is nothing other than making money for the artists--this means we're stuck in a loop for the moment!. Teens love FOB and JB---> Radio stations (aren't stupid and) play them---> Teens listen to more FOB and JB and love them---> etc!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

you need to look on the music evolution side of it

i could say all of rock music is a rehash of blues music, since rock mostly formed off blues/jazz

radio stations have gone from

jazz/blues

then to

rock and roll

then to

rock

and

pop

then to

synth pop

and

alt rock

so on and so forthWww@Enter-QA@Com

Last decent rock bands now are Foo Fighters (soon to be on hiatus), Velvet Revolver (heard Kravits was new lead vocals) and if you're into metal, the new Metallica album is great!.
But after the Foos tour is over, yeah it's pretty much dead!. I wouldn't count out Slash though!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

the problems the stations and the record companies, wasting time and money on the likes of the x factor when there is plenty of talent out there no getting a chance, bit like its easier for a musician to make a living in a tribute band than it is to try get their own music out thereWww@Enter-QA@Com

I know, right!?
So grateful I have my own 40+ CDs and now an iPod!.
I mean there are stations in my area that play good music but others are lacking!.!.!.
I listen to a few stations, that's it I guess!. :P
But I listen to anything (including Rock) that sounds good!.

You truly have to search for what you want these days, and if you look to "Radio", you won't find it, but what do i know - i bought the new Whitesnake album, and i kinda like it!.!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Try:
The Hives
The Hiss
Poets of the Fall (Signs of Life and Carnival of Rust)
The Von Bondies
Kissing Tigers
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club

Stop with the normal radio and try web radio instead!. Even Yahoo radio has far more stuff!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Yes it is, rock 'n roll has been going downhill ever since the Grunge Wave came along and it unfortunately got even worse when the Nu-Metal bands came out and it has failed to recover ever since!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I knew that when i saw a jonas bros thing called How To Be a Rockstar as if they could even go to a rock concert without getting hospitalizedWww@Enter-QA@Com
