Modern Christian music mostly began in Nashville, TN and California as well!. Back in the 60s with the days of the hippies, you had the Jesus Freak Movement!. Larry Norman and Randy Stonehill were two of the first either during this time or right around the end of that era!. Many of the early singers were also influenced by southern gospel -- some of whose early artists were Mahalia Jackson, Al Green , The Winans,and The Gaither Vocal Group ( Bill Gaither and Mark Lawry being two of the originals)!.
A few of the originals back in the 80s, as the music sound was more of a folk and or rock genre, were Stryper ( Michael Sweet --lead singer) Petra, and Bryan Duncan with his Sweet Comfort Band!.-- Bryan later on branched off on his own for a successful solo career!.
Then there came along some original solo artists in the 80s such as Michael W!. Smith, Amy Grant, Steven Curtis Chapman!., Keith Green, Sandy Patti, Larnelle Harris, Wayne Watson, and the great Rich Mullins who wrote the most insightful and moving songs in my humble opinion-- may God rest his soul!.
There are different genres of modern Christian music as well -- R & B such as BeBe and CeCe Winans --started as a brother and sister duet who now perform solo!. Then you have also some country musicians who also write and sing Christian based songs such as Dolly Parton, Larry Gatlin, and Charlie Daniels as well!.
There is Christian rock with some more recent bands spanning the 90s to the present time such as Switchfoot, Jars of Clay, Third Day - who are one of mine and my hubby's favorites /my hubby plays guitar and has such good taste in music --and also there is Casting Crowns, Mercy Me, Big Daddy Weave, , Jeremy Camp, and so on!.
There are Christian artists who are contemporary modern rock or pop and then some that are more Praise and Worship oriented --writing and singing songs with a ' vertical ' ( meaning praise going directly up to the Lord) message such as Chris Tomlin, Matt Redman, Matt Maher, Hillsong and Darlene Czech of Australia, Sonicflood, David Crowder Band and so on!. Some of the Christian rock groups like Third Day, and Newsboys and some solo artists like Michael W!. also have released a praise CD or 2 as well!.
I own way too many CDs -- well I guess you can never have too much music-- and quite a bit of that is Contemporary Christian music which I love so much --not just for the message of praise and honor to our Lord but also for the excellent and solid musical quality of these wonderful musicians!. I have seen many of these artists in concert through the years and hope to continue to listen to them for many more to come!.

Hey there Toughguy! I actually graduated from Belmont university in Nashville Tennessee and I can tell you that you have to look no further than "Music Town" USA! The churches down there are filled with Country Gospel artitsts both Young and Old! Inspiring Groups like the Gaithers had an old time Church Revival sound to them!. This sound was also incorporated to straight up country acts like The Statler Brothers!.
These bands in turn had a profound effect on young people growing up in the churches!. The young folks however had their own "Rock and Pop" oriented tastes!. These young folks like Amy Grant, White Heart, Petra and Michael W!. Smith drew spiritual inspiration from people like the Gaithers and later on acclaimed Christian vocalists like Sady Patti!. Even Elvis Presely and Jim Reeves had a decided impact with their beautiful Country Gospel deviations
