Well,rock is one BROAD term!.!.!.
They are certainly not diametrically opposite!.Technically,the opposite of pop music,would be very underground music,popular only amongst a small group of people or a cult fanbase!.E!.g!. Merzbow,Massona!.Rock music is popular A LOT of the times; rock music reaches the charts!.
The traditional song structures are kept by the majority of rock bands,the lyrical themes were a lot about love when rock started out; THE BEATLES, I could go on!.
Whatever the case,this section is DOMINATED by rock and metal fans,and complications due to the category rarely occur:PWww@Enter-QA@Com

they aren't opposites at all, they're both massively popular and derived from similar influences, though popular music does often include dance/metal/r&b etc!. due to its massive success but they are derived from totally different influences (though metal obviously is derived from rock influences which is probably where you're getting confused)!. rock isn't one blanket genre, look a little deeper!. i think (personally) they are enough alike to warrant being put into the same category!.!.
