Answers:
I interpret your questions as:
1!.) How hard is it to compose music!?
2!.) How long does it take to learn how to compose music into a score that others could perform!?

I would like to draw a distinction between writing music and writing GOOD music!. Most composition students already have some idea how to write music when they start music schools!. The desire to compose is very strong for composers so they probably have already trained either in a preparatory division of the conservatory or with private teachers (after all, most applications will require entering composition students submit examples of their music writing as evaluation criteria) or even through an almost obsessive self study of scores!. In my undergraduate composition auditions, the faculty looked at three compositions of mine in various styles!. I overheard the other applicant’s music while I was waiting outside the audition room, and it was well written showing the student already had at least some training in how to write a score for other musicians to read!.

Obviously, while in school, the compositions of students becomes more refined through the years of analysis, and critical feedback, and study of the elements of music - melody, harmony, form, counterpoint, orchestration, etc!.

You are only as good as your weakest element, so a composer who writes excellent melodies, but has terrible form, is not very good!. Because of this, you would be getting better and better throughout your schooling with study, practice, hearing your music performed, feedback, etc!.

As to your question is it difficult to write music - not so difficult!. Is it difficult to write GOOD music - very difficult!. There are many composers that are skilled in theory who are forgotten because their music did not have distinctiveness, memorability, technique, etc!. Many teachers believe distinctiveness and memorability cannot be taught!. For example, Sergei Prokofiev wrote his first opera, "The Giant", at the age of 9!. I bet it already showed hints of his uniqueness though it lacked the technique he later developed at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory!. As much as his teachers tried to force a style out of him, his distinctiveness would still come through without it being specifically taught to him!.

It takes some time to learn how to turn your ideas into sheet music that other performers can reinterpret successfully!. Even masterful composers, Gustav Mahler for example, constantly revised their works after hearing them!. To me, this indicates he felt some of his ideas either did not succeed as well as he imagined them, or he just second guessed himself quite a bit!. Vaughan Williams also revised the balance of his music after hearing it and would often remove sections that he felt did not serve his idea well enough - he did this well into his 80s!.

The technical skill of knowing how to write a music score comes quickly and certainly while you are in school!. Writing GOOD music is very difficult, and as to how long it takes, it could be a lifelong learning experience where you are just constantly getting better and better, more confident and efficient about writing the sounds you hear in your head and having an idea of what it will sound like when players read it BUT some people have nothing distinctive to say that even though they know how to write the score, the music isn’t memorable nor interesting enough to be well regarded!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

You can put your own compositions into sheet music TODAY - if you have decent musical skills!. Go download Finale Notepad from www!.finalemusic!.com!. The more musical education you have, one would *assume* that the quality of your work will also increase!. There ARE idiots who have sat thru many hours of education!., but have not LEARNED anything - in any field, not just music!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
