Hi there! Chopin Etudes, huh!? Nice job in getting to this point! Now you actually have to master them and make them sound like you are a professional musician!. Sounds fun, right!? If you ask me, it DOES!.

I know what you mean and I can help you!. The only thing I don't know for sure is: what etude are you talking about!?!? There are many etudes of Chopin's that have really contrasting dynamics!. I went through most of Chopin's etudes, and I just can't determine which etude you are talking about!. If I knew which one it was, I could help you on a more detailed scale, but this way, I can only help you generally!. So you want to make a contrast without disrupting the speed and the flow!? Well, that is actually not that hard, you know!. I had this problem before- I always use rubato- ALWAYS!. That might seem like it makes everything more expressive, but it actually doesn't sometimes!. There are definitely exceptions!. And what I have learned overall is that the use of rubato shouldn't "stop" the music- it should just make it more "wavy"!. Is it a really expressive part of the etude!? Then just follow what I said, and you will be fine!. Dynamics have nothing to do with speed, you know!. They ARE two different things!. In the big picture, they might have something to do with speed, because in the end, everything ties together!. But as Chopin said, "Simplicity is the highest achievement!." That's what I have been trying to achieve, for example, on Chopin's Barcarolle!. My problem was that I didn't have "flowy playing", so that means, everything sounded kind of bumpy!. The way to fix that is to just think about all the long phrases, and think along the lines of "always keep going" (and of course, do that without speeding up the piece!.)

And now, the technique, of course, which should always come first!. The best advice that I can give you is to practice slowly!. But first, you have to memorize the piece!. First, use a metronome at a really, really slow speed and then play it at that speed without the metronome, while checking your speed with the metronome from time to time!. And the most important thing about slow practicing : PRACTICE THE PIECE SLOWLY JUST AS YOU WOULD PLAY IT FAST!. PERFORM the piece slowly!. This might sound weird, but: the way your piece sounds at the slowest tempo WITHOUT THE MUSIC and WITHOUT THE METRONOME is the way your piece would sound if you played it at tempo!. So this should be everyone's view on slow practicing!. It is the most important kind of practicing!. You will see your change in your playing after you do this kind of practicing!. Another way to improve your technique is to do "fourth note accents"!. I am sure you don't know what those are, since my teacher was the one that invented this REALLY helpful technique exercise!. So basically what you do is, if your piece has 16th notes, you accent the fourth note in a group of 4 notes and play all of the notes staccato!. It might be helpful to start this exercise with scales first!. So always do this exercise with the metronome- start really slowly and speed up!. I think that the maximum speed that you should practice the accents with is about 126!. This is really hard to do- it makes the piece three times as hard, so when you go back to playing it normally, it will seem really easy and you will be able to play it really accurately and easily!.

So this is a llittle advice on how you should practice your piece!. This could apply to any piece, but the accents should only be used on places of pieces that are fast and/or technically demanding!. So good luck with your practicing and I hope you take my advice!Www@Enter-QA@Com

which etude!?!? with the forte to mf immediately is pretty much either masterful use of decresendo, or extremely fast reflexes to get the subito as seen the 5th etude, The beautiful hand movement probably will come as you play quickly but not jerkily!. To play fast, you need to stay light on your fingers!. the speed will make up for the sound!. more speed=more notes in a shorter period of time=louder!. Www@Enter-QA@Com
