Question: When an indie artist signs with a major label, do you feel that they lose some of their quality!?
Do you find that they have lost a little bit of what made them such a unique artist to begin with, and sound more generic and overproduced!?

Similarly, when a mainstream band leaves their label and goes independent, do you feel that their music is better now that they are doing their own thing and don't have the labels to push them around anymore!?

I think the beauty of indie music is that it's not written to please the masses and that obviously changes when they sign with a major label!.

But artists can still produce good real music on major labels, granted they need proven sales to be able to do it but take Kelly Clarkson for instance, Breakaway was a huge commercial sucsess (even though a lot of it was written by her) and that allowed her to release a very personal album!.!.!.My December, that wasn't intended for the masses or to sell records, that was the kind of album an artist on an independent label would produce!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I think that it depends on what the label is looking for!. I mean, Meg & Dia and Tegan & Sara are both fairly popular and they are signed to a major label!. They sound indie, so was Blur!. I think that mainstream bands, for the most part, are going to stay mainstream!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

definitely!.
indie groups are awesome because you feel like they're yours!. it's nice when you can talk about an awesome band that no one's heard of, but once they go mainstream, their sound changes because they're tryng to keep up with their new (major) label!. Www@Enter-QA@Com

As long as you can tell in their music that the label hasn't dictated the way the album should sound to push sales, then they're still the same to me!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

it has been known to happen!. more frequently the indie band goes to a major label and looses their edge than the mainstream band goes indie and gets an edge!. Www@Enter-QA@Com

It really depends on the act, often it works to the detriment of the band, but certainly not always!. For instance, the transition really worked well for Built to Spill whose first two albums on Warner Brothers were, in my opinion, their best!. I think that Elliott Smith transitioned onto Dreamworks beautifully, even to a point where his first Dreamworks record XO was his best in my opinion!. Figure 8 was a great (though a bit more hit and miss than I was accustomed to with him) record was well!. I will admit that I am in the minority of Elliott Smith fans in having that opinion, and I have heard that this record contract didn't exactly help his state of mind!. I've heard that it was an important domino that fell and if he had not signed that contract it is quite possible that he would be alive today!.

At any rate, I think it can certainly be a big factor in the equation as it brings in execs that want a certain product and will apply pressure (and more often than not have an amount of creative control), producers that have their own direction and sound ideas, and often overlooked a band wanting to grow into their new contract!. Not to say selling out, but!.!.!. Elliott Smith is a great example of this!. He had always been a big fan of big production pop rock (pop like McCartney and Elton John) and saw making a Dreamworks record as an opportunity to expand his sound in a bigger direction!. To take advantage of all these new resources that being under a big label's umbrella afforded him!. It did result in a much different record though, and I think many of his early fans were left behind to an extent!. People who loved his broken down, more bare bones sound!.

also, with or without new label's, sometimes a band evolves rapidly and suddenly!. I think that the new opportunities of a new contract with a bigger label can often happen in conjunction with this!. Maybe getting the big contract is a sign that the band can be taken more "seriousy!." Kind of a "wow, we really made it, time to raise the bar!." Even though as an example they aren't the best because they were on Capital the whole time!. I was having a conversation with a friend of mine who speculated (and made a very good case for it) that this is what kind of went wrong with the Dandy Warhols!. Two great records, then one that was very good (and just great at parts), and then something got lost and changed!. Almost as if they were overthinking the whole thing now!. They initially seemed to have a more fluid, kind of funner style!. Now they seem to take themselves more seriously to the detriment of the music!.

In a nutshell, I think it's a case by case basis sort of a thing!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
