Well there are the main genres which are pop, hip-hop, metal, rock, jazz, blues, clasical,!.!.!. any song would fit into one of those!. I trust you can tell those apart, because if you can't!.!.!.I really don't know how to describe each to you!. The difference is obvious!. And then there are sub-genres!. Those are the tricky ones!.
What I can tell you though, it the difference between the most confusing pairs!. For instance hip-hop and pop!. Hip-hop has a tinge of rap to it, whereas pop doesn't as far as I know!.
But that's not really my field!.
I can tell you the difference between rock and metal!. Rock is more up-beat and a bit more cheerful than metal, to put it bluntly!. Metal is heavier, and the electric instruments are more!.!.!.metallic!.!.!.hence the name!. It's more rythmic!.
Then there are many, mnay sub-genres!. For instance, heavy metal is your basic Metallice or Iron Maiden!. It's where the electric guitar and vocals are at their heaviest!. There's symphonic and progressive metal which rely on keys and synths, to create a heavily melodic atmosphere!. Then there's deat metal, which is similar to heavy metal, except for the vocals, which are mostly!.!.!.!.well!.!.!.growls!.!.!. Not regular singing!. Black metal is a combination of death metal and symphonic metal!. But the genres are so intertwined today, that it's really hard to tell them apart sometimes!. Band use more than just one influence!. And that goes for all kinds of music, not just metal!.
There are also many variations of rock!. You have classic Rock and Roll, which is basicly bands like the Beatles!. And you have Indie, which is a lot softer than regular rock!. You have nu metal, or new metal, which can sound like almost anything!. Linkin Park and P!.O!.D are good examples of that, so is Korn!.
There's pop-rock, I'd categorize Avril Levine as Pop Rock!. There's emo rock which is kind of like MCR and Afi, a lot lighter with the occasional heavy notes!.
That's how I classify them in my head, but seriosuly, it gives me a headache to think about it for too long!. It's really confusing!. So my best advice is just learn to tell the main genres apart, and don't worry about the sub-genres!. New ones are popping up every day!Www@Enter-QA@Com

The different genres have different sounds to them!. Once you find out what that sound is, it is usually easy to figure out what genre a song belongs to!. However, there are exceptions on which many people have conflicting ideas about(such as whether a band is hard rock or heavy metal) so it won't work every time!. Another way to tell is by the lyrical content but this does not always work either!.
Some more specific ways include listening to how fast the drum beat is, how fast other instruments are being played, and how the singer(s) sings!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Well with classical music you can have set guidlines and forms you use to create compositions with like an opera which is basically a play set in music form and an oratorio is a story without the play part are examples of genres within classical music!. Genres incoporate similar musical patterns and tempos and or ideologies that seperate it from other genres!. Here is a more in depth look at the explaination of genres!.!.!.

First of all you gotta listen to some hardcore music oulining the basic genres!. Then u gotta familiarize urself with the groove of how a certain style & genre goes!. Here's a list of some artists & their genres:

If I'm unsure I check the band/artist's wikipedia to see what genre they'd put themselves under!.
Most of my stuff is "Rock", but you can pretty much distinguish say "Rap" from "Heavy Metal" lol but sub-genres, I use my own opinion, wikipedia, that kind of thing!. XDWww@Enter-QA@Com

I agree with Maid Maria!. Wikipedia is a good resource for cataloging!.
If you go to a band's web site then that's useless because bands usually hate labeling themselves because they fear being pigeon-holed by their bloodsucking record companies!.
