I'm an Iowa native!. US midwest!. Cornfields and hogs, cold winters, and GREAT EDUCATION SYSTEM!.

I went to University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, a great small university and an affordable city to live in!. It helps to have a car but not absolutely necessary!. CF is not that big, mainly a college town!. If you lived on campus they have a dorm that a lot of international students live in because they don't toss you out if you can't get home for traditional breaks, but there are a bunch of different housing options to choose from!.

Cedar Falls has a very cool music scene all its own with a healthy variety of different bands, a lot of bands in the surrounding area and is a stop on a very tight circuit of clubs to play, several recording studios, and unique music stores!.!.!.the concert tours don't stop there but many bands do stop within a couple hours of there including Veteran's Auditorium in Ames, the Mark of the Quad Cities in Moline, IL and the State Fair in Des Moines!.

The University has a top notch music college for both grads and undergrads, including choral, orchestral, chamber, and jazz!. The school is also known for its accounting and education programs!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Definitely go to a 'smaller' big city!.!.!.!.!.!.!. I'm in Boston and the music scene is amazing!. Many, many artists have had their start here!. In addition to being a college town (there are 26 within the city limits), there is also the worcester (1 hr outside boston) and amherst (2 hrs outside boston) areas where there is a vibrant music scene w/ great schools as well!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Pshh!.!.!. everybody is always going "OMG NYC11!!! L!.A!.!1!!" guess what my Friends!? The BEST music comes from so called "second rate" cities!.

So:

Seattle, Washington (Nirvana got their start here! Chicago!? WTF!?)
Denver, Colorado
Minneapolis, Minnesota
Boston, Massachusetts

All great cities with vibrant underground music!.

As for universities !. UW, The University of Washington, its the best public (u!.s!.) college outside of Cali!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Chicago!. Any major tour always includes Chicago!. Cheap Trick and Nirvana got their start here, to name just two -- and that's just mainstream music!. Indie music is also big here!. We also have good schools such as Northwestern, DePaul, Loyola, just to name a few!. You don't have to have a car to live here (I don't)!.
