Question: Is Heavy Metal a genre, or is it a subgenre!?
For instance plenty of people say that it goes like this:
heavy metal:
- death metal
- black metal
- thrash metal
- power metal
- symphonic metal
- etc!. etc!. etc!.
But then you've got people saying, no, it goes like this:
!?I guess just metal!?:
- heavy metal
- thrash metal
- death metal
- power metal
- etc!. etc!. etc!.
Which is right!? This confuses me!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I always thought of it as both!. There are some bands that are just heavy metal and so it describes a genre of metal but it can also refer to everything metal!. So you can say I listen to heavy metal, and refer to death, power, etc!. But you could also say that you listen to heavy metal and just refer to bands that are classified as heavy metal!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

death, black, power, symphonic, thrash!.!.!.those are all offshoots of HEAVY METAL!. so Heavy metal is the genre!.!.!.not a subgenre!. If you want to refer to just the older metal bands just say "classic metal" it's not a genre but it helps give an idea of what bands you're talking about!.

I refer to Saxon as heavy metal,to set them apart from,let's say Immortal,who are black metal!.
