Youtube, enter nationwide contests, send a tape to Americas Got Talent covering your fav song, and try out for American Idol if over 16!.
also try getting into a talent agency!.

The music industry has been changing!.!. and its changing in the independent artists favor!. You no longer need to be signed to a record label to become known!.
I agree with the answer about youtube!.!.!. set up your own channel and try to draw people in!. Sing, maybe have some segments with talking, whatever you think people will like!.
You can also put your recordings up on cdbaby!.com where they can become very popular and even submitted into itunes!.
Get some performing experience!. Perform out and try to get a following!. Sell C!.d!.'s at your shows and pass out flyers for upcoming shows (or put flyers in places around where you are going to play)
Make a website and promote it!.
Check out some books on self promotion or the music industry!
