Question: How do I convince my friends rap sucks!?
They like Soulja Boy and all that crap!. One friend thinks this group "aesop rock" is good!. What should I tell them that would make them wanna listen to metal!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

rap music isn't about anything!. it's pointless!. music is an art form and rap mocks and squeezes every last drop of truth and meaning from it!. music is about expressing emotion and revealing what you feel!. rap isn't even singing, it's rambling about nothing that others can relate to or find comfort in!. The first thing you should do is ask them the most important question:
1) "Can you Tell me the oldest rapper that you know!?", if the only thing that they can say is not very old then you can tell them how other music generes, like rock, have been going on for many decades and that the classic bands are still around!.
2) if they reply something like "but they're old, its like watching my grampa doing rap" then tell them that there's a lot of newer rock bands that a lot of people like, but people will always be fans of the classic bands, and that most people will forget about today's rappers in a few decades!.
3) if they try to convince you that they have tallent, then ask them "How many instruments does your favorite Rapper play!?"!. Talk to them about Steven Tyler and the number of instruments that he plays and how famous Aerosmith is!. You can use any arist that you want, it doesn't have to be Steven Tyler!.
4) Like most people believe that Rap is all about Clothes, girls, drugs, and living on the streets, many anti-rock people say that Rock is all about Sex, Drugs, and Rock n' Roll!. If they tell you something like this then find some lyrics that say stuff about other stuff!. Rap is also not only about does things, so inform yourself before doing this!.
Try to know a little bit about rap so you can use it againts them, and every time that you have an opinion you need facts to tell them how wrong they are!. Imform yourself about rap and other types of music that you can use to take them down!.

I don't think you should be so judgmental, especially not towards such a broad genre with its own strong community!. Soulja Boy is bad, I agree, but I'm betting you that, if they were true Rap fans, they wouldn't just listen to Soulja Boy!. Mainstream never reflects the entire genre!.

I like Soulja Boy!. But metal is extreme, and the pure technicality of some metal bands blows my mind!. Ask your friends to point out in any rap song the points if any, where the beat/tune/rhythm changes up, then have them listen to August Burns Red, Parkway Drive, Blessthefall, and Veil of Maya!. i think it is very ignorant of you to say that all rap sucks!. when i was younger I used to think the same, but i found some artists that i enjoy!. Really, just play the songs for your friends, if they like it they like it, if they dont, they dont!. i dont think you should try to force your friends to listen to something they might not like!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Listen, everyone will do what they want!. You can't change visceral taste!. Like someone else mentioned, you can show them some really good hip hip, like Saul Williams, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Digable Planets, Public Enemy, etc!. But don't cram it down their throats!. That will just repel them, and it should!. Or give them music that crosses the genres, like Gorillaz and Cornershop (and Saul WIlliams, who I just mentioned)!. But it's no good to be all aggro about it!.
