I'd say Illinois!.
A lot of bands got started here, like the Smashing Pumpkins (they got their start at a small venue called the Metro, my favorite venue)!.

I know this isnt in the US but in Blighty I live down the road from a place recently voted a rock n'roll hotspot!. Alumni of Shepherd's Bush, West London!?
"Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey and John Entwhistle from The Who!.!.!.punk icons Glen Matlock, Paul Cook and Steve Jones from The Sex Pistols, and Mick Jones and Paul Simonon of The Clash were also born there, as well as John Weider of The Animals, grunge rockers Bush, led by Gwen Stefani's husband Gavin Rossdale, were named after the area where he grew up!.!.!.Pete Doherty!.!.!."

Supposedly, the big new indie rock scene is in Montreal!.
