What is the difference between a bass guitar and an up right bass??!

An electric bass has electronics to pick up the sound of the strings and transmit them to an amplifier; an upright bass doesn't need to be amplified (though a lot of uprights do have some electronics for that too); its large body provides more resonance, so the low notes can be heard sufficiently without amplification (there are also acoustic basses, but most of them are very quiet, and their tone isn't that great)!.
Upright basses aren't as common nowadays - their main use would be in an orchestra, or (more likely) in Jazz (which is also declining somewhat), though there are a lot of electric bass players in Jazz now too - Jazz bass used to be almost exclusively uprights!. Upright basses have a characteristic "thumpy" tone; they're fretless instruments, which makes sliding easier; the strings are also a lot fatter and harder to pluck than a standard bass guitar!.
They're generally strung with flatwound strings, while bass guitars are generally strung with roundwound strings (though you can get flatwound strings for an electric bass, which gives it a tone more similar to an upright bass - fretless basses are almost always strung with flatwounds)
On an electric bass, it's usually a lot easier to tailor your tone to suit different styles of music (due to the electronics, built in EQs, and amplifiers) - for example, achieving a jazzy tone with an electric bass can be done by boosting the low and high frequencies, and cutting out most of the mids!.!.!.upright basses always give you pretty much the same tone!.
