Techno is an EDM genre!. EDM stands for electronic dance music!. It is a blanket term for a set of genres that uses electronic elements but is danceable at the same time!. Electronica is different!. Electronica tends to be non-dance oriented, yet it still uses electronic elements!. Both EDM genres and electronica may contain lyrics, but a higher percentage of electronica tracks use lyrics as they are less oriented on the synths than in EDM!.
Techno is just one EDM genre!. Other EDM genres include trance, house, drum & bass, and many others!. These genres are NOT the same!. Anyone who tells you there is no difference doesn't know what they're talking about!. It is a very common mistake, however, to mix them up!. Many people use the word "techno" in place of EDM!. They are not synonymous!. Techno is techno, trance is trance, house is house, etc!. Techno is not trance or house!. Conversely, trance isn't techno or house, and house isn't trance or techno!. While there is no universally accepted method of classification, experienced listeners can tell the differences!. Being able to do this comes only from experience!. Some people or websites will try to explain it to you, but you will NEVER learn just from reading about them!. You have to listen widely!. If you only read about the genres and you think you know how to tell the differences, you're probably doing something wrong!. Sometimes, tracks from the same genre may be very different!. For example, tech trance sounds very different from uplifting trance as it tends to use fewer melodic elements!.
Yet another common mistake is to mix up all of EDM with eurodance!. When some people say techno, they're actually referring to a eurodance track, and that would be a misuse of terminology!. Techno is not eurodance!. Cascada and DHT would be eurodance!. They cannot be referred to as techno and neither techno nor eurodance are representative of all of EDM!.
