Answers:
A whammy bar is basically a floating system!. There is a part behind the bridge that is connected to coils/springs on 1 side, on the other side its connected to the strings!. The tension on the strings should equal the tension of the springs!. (You can see the springs by screwing open the little door on the back of the guitar!.)
Basically when you pull the bar toward the neck, it loosens the tension of the strings thus lowering the pitch that the strings produce, and when you pull the bar back away from the neck, it tightens the strings thus making a higher pitch!.
The uses of the whammy/tremolo bar are kinda an alternative to vibratos and bends, and it allows you to do that to chords, and if you use some distortion you can do some fancy tricks like dive bombs and squeals (which are used alot by Pantera, and Damageplan guitarist, Dimebag Darrell [RIP])
Some basic pains of having a whammy bar are:
-when you wanna change the tuning of the strings, you need to screw some screws inside the guitar (yes, you need to open the back door of the guitar)
-and if you change the gauge (thickness) of the strings, you need to do a whole lot of setup!.
Overall, I think the whammy is really cool if your not planning on changing strings every month, and if your ok with opening the back of your guitar!.

The simple answer is it bends notes!. Most beginner guitars I've seen actually come with whammy bars!. First Act, a common brand found at Wal-Mart, usually has them with their models!. They're not really neccessary at all!. Some songs call for them, but you can usually get by without!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
