It started out as a status symbol in the streets of N!.Y!.C!. If you were a drug dealer, hustler, booster, jostler, worked and made good money etc!. you went to Harlem!. Dapper Dan would hook up your footwear-- esp sneakers,clothes, hats with pieces from original "no bootleg" Louis, Fendi, Gucci, & expensive name brand designers!. When you wore that in the hood people knew you were getting $ legally or illegally!.
This started in the 80's NYC---has nothing to do with Kanye, Jay-Z etc!.!.!.
