I've always assumed it was a man leaving his woman due to uncontrollable circumstances!. Personally, and I'm probably not meant to get this specific, I've always pictured a college guy going home for the summer!. I mean, the guy just really doesn't want to leave!. But, he's got to ramble when the summer comes a rollin'!. Plus, he mentions having her back again, which implies this happened more than once!.
It could also just be about a guy afraid of commitment that keeps leaving his girl and then crawls back - "summer" in this case I guess would be the lure of other women!.

my personal interpetation of the song sounds if someone is torn between a life they left behind when they got with the person now loves!. but the life left behind is beconing and will cause a break up, or simply trading one life for anotherWww@Enter-QA@Com
