Ok in my opinion it started after 50 cent came out the songs became more vulgar and more stupid but people started to listen to them because of the media!.
Radio is another thing to blame because radio stations will play the lamest and/or dumbest stuff and keep playing it over and over again so they force you to like it!. For example when lil Wayne got money came out every second it was on every radio station and on alot of music shows!.
also mostly every song out now is rather lame but got a good beat to hide the dumb lyrics like lil waynes lollipop and alot of new artist are just in it to make quick money and they aren't doing anything new just the same old songs and same old lame lyrics!.

Its starts with the record companies!. They only look for one type of artist!. When you have only one type of artist in one genre, the type of music becomes narrow minded and trite!. On top of that I think more people listen to the music and ignore the lyrics!. So you can have rappers with low skill but "nice" beats, become mainstream figures delivering only one type of message!. On top of that, the message they deliver is negative, thus increasing the stereotype of rappers and black people!. It doesn't stop there, most black males listen to and some if not most are greatly influenced by these type of narrow minded and negative raps, and they strive to be like the rappers who deliver the messages!. So in turn more black people adopt the negative mannerisms introduced by the mainstream rappers and the cycle continues over and over!. At first "gangsta rap" started off as telling stories from the hood and how they are affected by politics!. But record companies realize that the majority of the audience likes "gangsta rap" the most, so they over saturate the market!. So eventually artists started glorifying the negativity found in "gangsta rap!." Yeah something like that!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
Mike S and Ryan are right, i feel Yeah 50 cent and after he came out in early 2000, it got more Crappy, its all know about Cars, and sissy dances and Gay T-pain voices, its cause Most of all those 90's listners buy the old stuff and all the new crap coming out well i mean all THE good rappers are ready out and dont release albums as often as the new guys and the newer rappers suck and People who like real Rap Like Nas, or Method man or You no dope stuff, dont buy 50 cent crap or Soulja boy but all the easily Influced Kids do, Allot is because Music Companys Realize that People dont listen to lyrics anymore, People like CRAP about the same cars and women over and over again,

The bling bling era damaged hip hop badly!. Everyone started rapping about what cars they drive, clothes they wear, and what type of houses they live in!. Most people like me can't relate to that type of lifestyle and after a while it gets monotonous and boring!. No one raps about anything of substance anymore!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
I think its just the change in generations!. Maybe our children's children will appreciate real hip hop!. Maybe their children will!.

The era of over-commercialism!. It has wrongfully smudged what hip hop is in the mainstream view!. It can't be going downhill if it's sales are going up, but quality for these mainstream cats aren't much of a standard!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
