What effect is being used?!

Question: What effect is being used!?
how do bands like the Deftones make that untuned radio sound on the vocals have like in the song "change (in the house of flies)"!? or yellow submarine by the Beatles!? is it compression, distortion or am i way off!? Www@Enter-QA@Com

Answers:

It is a type of distortion, yes!.

As with any effect on vocals, you have to be careful how much you use - subtlety is truly key here!.

You can run vocals through distortion pedals, megaphones, amps of different types, etc!. Some will work better than others, I can't give you specifics!. The important thing is to keep the gain as low as you can to still get the effect!.

On further thought, I wonder if the effect comes from turning up the gain on a tube mic pre in those specific instances!. Hmm!. Hard to say!.

i hear a heck of a lot of reverb but i'm not really sure
you can try reverb, also a bit of distortion
p!.s!. distortion and vocals don't really go together well so a little i guess!?

hope i helped!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Sounds more like an echo type of effect to me, thats one thing about them though is that chino always uses effects when recording, so when they're live, he does'nt sound as good!. They still rock though!!Www@Enter-QA@Com
