What makes it hip hop?!


Question: What makes it hip hop!?
A lot of artists that are considered to be part of other genres use elements of hip hop, but they're not hip hop artists!. For example:

- Linkin Park has a rapper and a DJ
- Rage Against the Machine was fronted by a rapper
- Jazzanova is a jazz band made up of all DJs
- DJ Spooky is know primarily as a jazz artist
- Galactic has been using rappers as their vocalists since Theryl DeClouet left

On the other hand, hip hop music was traditionally made with just DJs and rappers, but live instrumentation is becoming increasingly popular in hip hop!. Most of The Roots' early work was basically jazz with rap vocals but they were labeled as hip hop!. The J!. Davis Trio is considered hip hop, but they only use live instruments with no DJ!.

What exactly is it that distinguishes hip hop artists that use elements from other genres from non-hip hop artists that use elements from hip hop!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

There's no concrete rule that says that this or that is hip hop, but it seems to be one of those things that could be best summed up by the quote from Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart:

"I shall not today attempt further to define the kinds of material I understand to be embraced within that shorthand description; and perhaps I could never succeed in intelligibly doing so!. But I know it when I see it!."

More than anything, I have found that the best barometer of what makes something hip hop is to study the intent of the artist behind the work!. Do they consider themselves hip hop artists!? Chances are, if most people were to examine their work, they would come to similar conclusions as to whether or not the artist is actually from the sphere of hip hop!. Acts like Rage Against the Machine, Linkin Park, Galactic, etc are all hip hop influenced or hip hop inspired!. But if you were to break down their work, ultimately I think most people would agree that they are not "hip hop" itself!. And I think most members of those bands would agree!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I consider artists like Linkin Park, Gym Class Heroes, Gorillaz, etc to be hip Hop
i think anyone that raps on a track should be considered hip hop, the Genre is expanding and goin different places!.!.

Hip Hop is not just a Dj and a rapper, it can be many things now!.!.
i think alot of Live instrument groups still use producers/Dj at the same so they could def still be considered Hip Hop!. For instance GCH had Cool and Dre produce the beat for "Peace Sign Up / Index Down" but they still played the live instruments over the beatWww@Enter-QA@Com
