Answers:
Prokofiev's 'Divertimento' was completed in 1929, the same year that he finished the ballet 'The Prodigal Son'!. This was during the time that Prokofiev was living and working in Paris (1920-35)!. He had been known previously as something of an 'enfant terrible', writing experimental, loud and rhythmically-led music such as is to be found in the 'Scythian Suite' (written before his departure from Russia to France), the ballet 'Le pas d'acier' (1924), the Second Symphony (1925), the opera 'The Fiery Angel' (1927) and the Third Symphony (1928)(with music based on 'The Fiery Angel')!. Following these works, Prokofiev started to incorporate more lyrical melodic material into his music, rather than relying on rhythmic impetus!. Among the works that typify this are the ballet 'The Prodigal Son' (1929), the Fourth Symphony (1930)(based on themes from 'The Prodigal Son') and the 'Divertimento' (1925-29)!.

So, it can be said that the 'Divertimento' dates from a watershed period in Prokofiev's career as a composer!. The 'Divertimento' is a 15-minute work in four movements!. Originally written for orchestra (as Op 43), it also exists in an excellent piano transcription (as Op 43b) made by Prokofiev himself (he transcribed quite a lot of his orchestral music for piano so he could perform it himself in solo recitals)!. The first movement ('Divertissement; Moderato, molto ritmato) was the earliest movement to be written and still shows characteristics of Prokofiev's earlier rhythm-led music with its heavy, punching chords and steady pulse!. However, the second movement (Nocturne; Larghetto (non troppo lento)) immediately takes the listener into a new sound world, with that wonderful sinuous melodic writing for which Prokofiev became so famous!. The third movement 'Danse' (Allegro energico) could easily have been lifted straight from 'The Prodigal Son' ballet (although it wasn't!)!. The final 'Epilogue' (Allegro no troppo e pesante) is also very balletic in quality and typical of the music from the period 1929-32!.
