Improvizing is a pretty advanced skill for any instrument!.
The first thing you need to do is find the chord and chord changes in the section of the song where your solo will go on!. Now, as you may know, a chord is the first, third, fifth, and sometimes seventh interval in a scale!. If you have things above the measures like C7, Cad9, Amin7, etc, that'll tell you what your chord is, which will tell you which notes you can play, and which notes you need to avoid!. Ask your band director for help deciphering chords, if you try it yourself, you'll just get a head ache!. Usually, the third of the chord will sound the best, just becuz the physics behind music!.
Anyhow, spend some time listening to your solo section without trying to play anything!. If you're decently musically inclined, then rhythms should pop into your head, and that's where you start!. When I first taught myself to improvise, I'd take the thoughts that popped to mind, and tried to recreate them with horn(I play trumpet, but same thing)!. After you have something figured out, and you can play pretty well on your horn, put it with music!. Alot of the best improvs are rehearsed, so don't worry about doing something different everytime!. Come up with a couple of licks that you always play (such as openings and closings to the solos, and maybe a spot in the middle, that way, you only have to come up with a little on the spot!.
Another way to do this is to listen to a professional version of this song, then take some of the licks you like and put it into your solo!.
Try to stay simple, it doesn't have to be some big elaborate solo, less is more in beggining impovs!.
There's alot of musical theory that goes into improv, but don't get wrapped into it too much until you get to late high school!.
Lastly, for improv, you just have to FEEL the music within you!. I always shut everything else out when i improv!. When I got really good at it, I started making a game out of it, and play solos on any song i heard anytime i had my trumpet out, and for the songs I knew really well, they sounded great, for others I didn't know at all, they were a little rough, xD!.
Well, I hoped I helped!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
