Question: How many times can a rapper be outshined on a track and still be considered an all-time great!?
I personally feel that Jay-Z has been outshined on a track at least three times:
By Rakim on "The Watcher"
By Eminem on "Renegade"
By Scarface on "Guess Who's Back"
I think Jay-Z is one of the better rappers of his generation but I've been hesitant to consider him an all-time great and this is one of the reasons why!.

But, Looking at the bigger picture can you think of any other hip-hop artist that has pumped out as much relevant, genre-defining material as Jay in the past decade!? After damn near 15 years in the game he remains undisputedly the most powerful name in hip-hop!.
Ultimately, no other rap star has accomplished half of what Jay has accomplished!. He's evolved an industrialist, pop icon, and philanthropist whose power, success, and enormous catalog of classic hits have been incomparable!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I feel where you coming from, but the three you mention are lyrically a level above him!. (Including NaS, who HNIC mentioned)!.

it depends on who the rapper is getting outshined by!. i think Jay-z has a habit of gettin got on his own songs (i'd also throw in Nas/Success & Bun B/Big Pimpin)!. u look at the rappers on his tracks, they are all great!. When you start getting murked by average rappers, i think that may be some cause for concern!. But i never really looked at all time-great considerations from this perspective

But how many times has Jay outshined someone else!? He outshined Nas on Black Republicans and Success, he outshined Kanye on the diamonds remix, he outshined Jeezy in the Put on remix, he outshined Biggie in Brooklyn's Finest, need I continue!? Everone is outshined at some point, because nobody is perfect, even the best of the best have bad days!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
He can't be amazing on EVERY track!. I think Jay-z is a bit overrated, but his music is inspiring and way better than most of his peers!. The whole concept of "G!.O!.A!.T!." and "Best Rapper Alive" is faulty!. NaS has been outshined many times as well!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
