i could say that they had good songs without Nico like Sweet Jane, and Rock and Roll, but they had good ones with her like pale blue eyes,and venus in furs!.

Hmm,tough one!.Their work with Nico was more unconventional and original--their first album is not only my favorite VU album,but one of my favorites of all time!.Nico's voice is very exotic and out there,and that can be quite fascinating!.
On the other hand,Lou Reed's vocals have this distinct rock n' roll touch that makes them kind of badass!.And I agree that it is better if he sings his own lyrics!.
