No!. It Was Written was far more popular than Illmatic when it came out!. Most people hadn't even heard Illmatic when It Was Written came out!. Illmatic's popularity was sparked by the popularity of It Was Written!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
It Was Written was indeed more popular than Illmatic when it first dropped but there was some heavy backlash against it as well!. A lot of people weren't happy with the slicker production that the Trackmasters brought or with the Mafia-theme that was prevalent on the album, since it smacked of trying to fit in with a fad!.
It Was Written was more heavily marketed and got much more airplay on radio and MTV, which led to it being more popular!. But I don't think that people appreciated it from an artistic standpoint for quite a while!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

sell!.!.!.!. mechanical pretty much explained it!.!.!. illmatic didnt have to popular singles to sell records he only sold like 500,000 for a long time i believe and once it was written came out people also got illmaticWww@Enter-QA@Com
