The verses should be about 6-8 lines long (depending how long the lines are) and the chorus should be about 6 lines!.

Some would say that you need to know your instrument, musical theory and how to write a poem but I would say that what is most important is something to write about and that comes directly from life experience!.
Most writing (and this includes music and literature) doesn't come from wanting to write but needing to write!. It doesn't come from any external reason but from an inner drive, a feeling that needs to be expressed!.
For example Joni Mitchell openly admits that she started writing her own songs because she couldn't play guitar very well and couldn't learn other people's songs!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
