Answers:
I recently watched an interview with Paul Simon who was explaining it!. It blew me away, then I understood!. It was about the assassination of President John F!. Kennedy!. How the nation was gripped in shock and silence as the nation watched his funeral procession!.

HOWEVER I found this article which may also be of interest to you!.!.!.!.(excerpt)

"Paul Simon took 6 months to write the lyrics, which are about man's lack of communication with his fellow man!. He averaged one line a day!."

BUT BUT BUT

I found this piece of news that seems to combine both of these explainations:

The Sound of Silence
Written by Paul after hearing about President Kennedy's assassination in November 1963!. It took a long time to complete, four months, finally finished on February 19th 1964!. There are 4 different studio versions I am aware of:

1) The Paul Simon Songbook
2) Wednesday Morning 3am
3) The Sound of Silence (overdubs on 3)
4) The Graduate

Paul - "A societal view of the lack of communication!."
- "The lyrics burst forth practically writing themselves"

Art - "The Sound of Silence is a major work!. We were looking for a song on a larger scale, but this is more that either of us expected!."

From what I know and have interpreted, the song is about a silent vigil or protest!. The song talks about all the things you can observe in silence!. There is one verse that goes:
"And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more!.
People talking without speaking,
People hearing without listening,
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dare
Disturb the sound of silence"

This is the verse that suggests it is about a silent protest!. It also adds to the theme of the power of silence and all the things that we are able to observe when everything is quiet!.

Hope this helps you to understand the song a bit more! :)

The song is about man's lack of communication with his fellow man!. If things would be talked out it can avoid a lot of problems!. Problems can be solved only by honesty!.

EDIT:
"thanks guys!. my band director was saying it is about war but i don't really know it could be about that!. is it because of the protests against war!?"

Well, I think it means that ignorance and apathy destroys our ability to communicate with each other, including in war!. When all communication is shut down, the only sound is silence!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I always thought it was a protest song speaking out against the war!. But no matter what it is about, it is still a great song and I think it is cool that kids are discovering older music!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I think it's about depression and the "silence of loneliness" in his head!. Www@Enter-QA@Com

They were on drugs back in those days!. So don't worry about it!. There is not telling what it means!. We may never know!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Well it's about darkness!.!.!. my old friend!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
