Answers:
It doesn't matter much, as long as it's decent quality!.
Ibanez, Washburn, Takamine, Yamaha, Epiphone, Tanglewood, Seagull, all make quality instruments at very decent prices!.

If you have more to spend (I'd not advice that for a total beginner), add Martin, Ovation, Taylor, Fender, Gibson to the list!.

For a first decent acoustic instrument, look to spend no more than about $500 unless the one you absolutely love the feel and sound of is a bit more and nothing else takes your fancy!.
You will ideally want a guitar with a solid spruce or cedar top and mahogony or rosewood sides and back (solid back is ideal, but you are unlikely to find many of them in this price range, and you can get very nice instruments with laminated backs)!.

At the low end of the range, the Ibanez PF is excellent value for money!.
Over that, look for something in the class of the Ibanez AEL!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

The first three responses are crammed full of misinformation!. First Act makes the worst guitars on the planet!. Fender makes acceptable acoustic guitars but they're no better than lots of other brands that are made in Asia!. Gibson acoustics are okay but are not priced for beginners!.

Nylon string guitars, also called classical guitars, are used almost exclusively for classical music!. If that's not where your interests lie then do NOT buy a nylon string guitar!. With any guitar your fingers will hurt a bit at the beginning but it's no worse with a steel string guitar!. And if you're in your teens or beyond then you should buy a full size guitar!.

While dreadnaughts are the most popular shape for acoustic steel string guitars they are a mistake for most of the people who buy them!. They are just about the largest size and most people, especially smaller females, find them uncomfortable to play for any extended period of time!. I urge you to try and consider a smaller guitar!.

You will need to spend the best part of $200 to find something good enough to learn on and not hold you back!. Good brands are Seagull, Yamaha, Ibanez, and Epiphone!.

Well if you're an absolute beginner the guitar you should buy will be made for nylon strings making it better on your fingers!. Until you get to a point where you think you can stand it invest in a steel string, but for a first guitar try a 3 quarter size with nylon strings, I'd go with a dreadnaught shape wich is the normal acoustic shape!. Try something cheap so when you do get good enough you'll be able to buy a decent accoustic with steel strings which beleive are definately worth the investment!. Hope that helps
