the bandmembers themselves will tell you they sold out in 1986 when they released the "cliff em all" video as a tribute to cliff--it evens says it on the back cover of the VHS tape (remember VHS!?, ha ha)!.!.!.!.anyone who actually followed metallica in the early 80's will tell you that up until that point metallica vowed strongly to never make videos because "videos and mtv were a sell-out"!.!.!.they "sold out again" in 1988 when they released the video for "one"!.!.!.!.any referral tyo them being a "sell out" after that is just some poser making up shi*Www@Enter-QA@Com

Sure, on Black album it wasn't thrash anymore, but that just means they grew up!. You can't expect them to make the same thrash album forever!.
But, I think they sold out on Load and Reload, and St!.Anger too!.
