Tagging Metal bands by genre!

Question: Tagging Metal bands by genre
I am not a fan of putting tags on bands (especially in the metal genre)

But how do you differentiate between thrash, doom, nu-metal, etc!.

Some bands like Soulfly and Lamb of God have definate thrash songs and elements, but continuously get called something else by people!.

How do you substantiate your categorization of metal bands!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

Answers:
Im with you!.!.!.!.I dont go for the labels!.

If you plug in an amp, you are rock n roll!. That is all I go with!.

Take Grunge for instance!.!.!.!.!.Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Mother Love Bone!. What do those bands have in common besides a spot in a 90s music store and a mutual home town!? Nothing!. Still, many people continue to label them all as "grunge"!.

Metal is another tricky genre!. What is Korn if they arent Metal!? Why split hairs and call them Nu-Metal!? Slayer is thrash, Pantera is Hard Rock, Deicide is Black Metal, Cannibal Corpse is Death Metal!.!.!.!.!.
BS!.!.!.!.it is all "metal"!.

Is Poison "Hard Rock"!? If so!.!.!.what does that make Bon Jovi or Guns N Roses!? Nitpicking over genres is a futile exercise because as soon as you figure it out for yourself, you will notice that noone else agrees with you anyway!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I'm in the minority here, but I personally love genres!. When I'm in a specific mood, for instace a gothic mood or a power mood, it's easy to go to Music > Genres on my iPod and click on that genre!. Then I have a big list of bands!.

I've got hundreds of different bands in my music library, how am I supposed to memorize each and every single one!?

For me it's a bit easier!. I listen mostly to symphonic power bands and gothic metal bands!. I've also got some doom and some folk/viking!.

I usually check out Encyclopedia Metallum for the genres, but if I don't like it then I'll list it as what I think it is!.

I don't listen to thrash, but doom metal is easy to recognize!. It's supposed to be apocalyptic sounding!.

Eh oh well!. I'm sure everyone disagrees with me, but it's my opinion that I think genres are useful!. How else will I find similar bands!? *shrug*Www@Enter-QA@Com

Gekokujo,
I hope you was kidding when you said Pantera was Hard Rock!.!.!.Pantera was Pure ******* Groove Metal!.

About the question: How can you give a tag!?
Answer: Giving a tag isn't a easy thing to do!. First, you have to listen to the main albums of that band, and so understand what kind of sound it is!.
After, you have to listen the song lyrics!.

Giving a tag to a band is not a senseless thing!.
Groove is a thrash metal subgenre, very similar to Thrash MetalWww@Enter-QA@Com

Its simple, I don't tag my bands!. Its to much work!. I like to walk into a CD store with an open mind (and wallet)!.

I know what you mean by the elements!. Take doom and thrash, they're (normally) both very distinct with their sounds!.

Categorization just isn't necessary!.!.!. Www@Enter-QA@Com
