Syd Barrett Overrated?????!
Question: Syd Barrett Overrated!?!?!?!?!?
Do you think he is overrated!?!? i think so a little bit!. sure he was an amazing musician, but it was better when he left then if he would of stayed!. No offense to those die hard Floyd Fans (Even though i am one) but he wasnt that good (Not later pink floyd good)!. He could play a mean guitar and right some good songs, but he really didnt do much!. Roger waters and Gilmour made the band what it is today!. The big thing Barret did was go crazy!. why is that good you may ask!? If syd didnt leave we wouldn't have dark side of the Moon, Wish you were here or The Wall!. I for one am glad he left the band!. I do love his music though and in no way am i saying he is horrible!. Www@Enter-QA@Com

Yes, he was overrated, but I think it's really because he didn't write that much!. He was also not the founder, as many people think, and instead joined an existing band that contained Rick Wright, Nick Mason, and Roger Waters!.

i agree with you!. while he was a good guitar player and a good song writer and pretty much started the psychedelic movement in Britain, dave was a way better guitarist and roger was a way better songwriter!. i fell bad about how he had to leave the band because he was a great friend to all the members but the pink floyd without him was a lot better than with him!. and your right the great albums would never have been made!. so while it was sad how it happend it was for the best!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
I like Floyd during the Roger driven era best!. Syd was great though too!. Pink Floyd probably wouldn't be here if it was wasn't for Syd Barrett!. And he is not over-rated!. There are many people that don't even know who he is or have any idea about Pink Floyd's beginning music (with Syd) so I'd say he's far from over-rated!. Www@Enter-QA@Com

I don’t think so but if he is overrated he deserves it, the poor guy lost his music career over serious mental illness way too early, he didn’t even get a chance to shine!. if he hadn’t ever been there in the band Floyd would have never made it as far as they have in my opinion, he was a big influence on Gilmore I have heard him say it a thousand times, and now he doesn’t have a chance at all because he is deceased so people should let him have the glory for god sakeWww@Enter-QA@Com

Or a Jimi Hendrix Experience or a Beatles White Album or Brian Eno or Talking Heads or Flaming Lips etc!. ad nauseum!.
"The big thing" about him wasn't that he was such a great guitar player or lyricist and it certainly wasn't his mental problems!. His contribution to music was in his unique way of composition and his usage of non-musical sounds in his recordings!. He had a certain innocent whimsical style that was lacking in Floyd albums after Piper!.!.!. He virtually single-handedly created psychedelic music!. Whether or not that was because of his mental state we will never truly know!.
But remember, he did all this before he really went mad anyway!. (except maybe for a few of those solo lp's)
Don't get me wrong, I love everything Pink Floyd did up to and including The Wall, but (and I'll use a quote from Nicolas Schaffner's book "Saucerful of Secrets" to make this point)

yeah, pink floyd got better when he left and David Gilmour came!. but, i don't think he's overrated!. after all, he did start the band! i think people mostly admire the music AND the craziness (even though i don't know why someone would admire it!. i kind of feel bad for him cause of all the trouble he went through and all!.) some people also probably admire his art (paintings and drawings, i mean)!. i like a lot of them, myself!.
i also don't think nearly as many people are huge syd barrett fans!. i think most of 'em are huge pink floyd fans and they happen to think syd is awesome, too!.
