There is

Heavy Metal
Death Metal
Power Metal
Black Metal
Thrash
Alternative Metal!.

All other SUB-Genres (Prog, Doom, Nu, Sypmhonic, Folk!.!.etc) Are related to or descended from one of these!.

Considering that the Bands in the NWoBHM lacked nay cohesive unifying sound (From Diamond Head to Iron Maiden to Def Leppard for the love of god) I can't identify that as a Genre!.!.!. so much as a movement (Akin to the British Invasion of the 60s)

And!.!.sorry!.!.but to me!.!.Glam will alway Hard Rock!. Warrant , White Snake, and Poison are by NO means Heavy Metal!. Some bands like the Crue and WASP might be on the edge of Metal!.!.!.!.!. but Glam as a whole just AIN'T Metal!.
