-Just get the first three albums(Kill 'em All, Ride the Lightning, and Master of Puppets)!. They deliver great song after song!.
-I prefer Ride the Lightning out of those three though (To be honest, RtL is my favorite Metallica album from their whole discography)!.

I also recommend the stuff from "The $5!.98 E!.P!. - Garage Days Re-revisited!." It was nothing but covers, but it was Jason Newsted's debut as bassist and had a very raw feel to it!.
