I'll try to keep it short and sweet!.
Acoustic/electric guitar is basically an acoustic guitar with either a pickup mounted in the sound hole of the guitar, or a piezo pickup mounted under the bridge!. Either way, it will allow the use of an amplifier to enhance the volume!.
An acoustic guitar works by the strings vibrating, which the vibrations are projected through the sound hole!. This is how you hear an acoustic guitar without amplification!. With use of an electric pickup, the strings vibrations are transfered from the pickup to the amplifier!.
To use an acoustic electric guitar, all you need is the guitar and strings!. Depending on your playing style, you may want finger picks, regualr picks, and slides!. If you desire an amplified signal, then you will need an amplifier and a cord (1/4") as well!. Piezo pickups in acoustics also require power from a 9V battery as well!.
Basically if your just learning, buy the acoustic/electric and get the amp later when you are sure you want to play!. Sometimes playing is such a daunting task, many will quit before ever learning!. I'm not saying you'll be one of those cases, but if you were, you wouldn't have as much invested!.
