What about Curtis Institute of Music? Why does almost everyone only mention Jull!

Question: What about Curtis Institute of Music!? Why does almost everyone only mention Julliard!?
Really, what is the difference!? Some of my friends went to Curtis and they became great performers!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Answers:
All the above answers are incorrect and hold no value!. Both the Curtis Institute and Juilliard are two of the top music conservatory's in the world!. Both have leading faculty with experts in their field and instrument!. Both schools have distinguished alumni and huge endowments!. Both schools are world leaders in producing world class performers and are schools that are recognized world wide!. Both schools are respected by professional classical musicians!.

The person who gave numbers about admissions is wrong!. Both schools do not limit their number of admissions, however, Curtis is specifically for undergraduate studies!. There is no graduate or doctoral studies at Curtis while there are at Juilliard!.

There is no truth in those admission numbers stated!. If their are available spots for students, the school will accept them!. They do not say "we will only accept 25 violins"!. They may only take 15 violins, maybe 30!.!.!. it all depends on how many openings are there and if there are enough applied teachers to teach!. Sometimes a school will accept more than they can handle because there is exceptional talent!. No one knows how many students a school will accept each year!. You just audition and hope for the best!.

The business about RCM data!? A bunch of lies!. No music conservatory has access to RCM data including the Glenn Gould School!. The results of Royal Conservatory of Music Exams is confidential to the exam department, the student and teachers!. Glenn Gould School does not ask for RCM exam results for students who apply for admission!. You may state that you have a grade 10 or ARCT but the school does not ask for the grade even though the Glenn Gould School is associated with the Royal Conservatory of Music!.

Juilliard is much more popular because it has been around longer and has a larger student body!. A large student body results in more alumni!. Juilliard graduates are all over the world and since Curtis focuses on undergraduate studies, they do not have the same recognition because almost all performers out there go for a graduate degree of some sorts in music!. Undergraduate studies is not enough because there is so much to cover in terms of advanced studies!.

The difference is that - Curtis is only an undergraduate school, there for, their graduates go on to further studies at other top conservatories like Eastman, Manhattan School of Music, Juilliard, Peabody, New England Conservatory etc!. etc!.

Juilliard gets a lot of publicity because it is New York City!. The cultural mecca of North America!. Juilliard alumni includes some of the biggest names out there!. And like I said earlier, Curtis grads go on to other schools where no student can go to Curtis for Graduate work!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Chinese Cowboy is 100% correct!. - and far and away the most qualified responder to this question!. None of the other people who responded gave their credentials - this time or any other, as far as I have seen - so we are to assume that they HAVE none!. Exception is legandiv - I have read his profile, and know him from previous posts, to be intelligent an well-informed!. Their answers are built of speculation and rumor, while Chinese Cowboy has FACTS - education, experience, and a VERY generous spirit in giving length and detailed responses whenever the question is within his vast realm!. So - I expect that once again, other responders will give ME *thumbs down* for heartily endorsing CC's response - it iw worth it for me to *take the bullet* for him!.

So that my answer is not related for failure to respond to the question, I will only essentially repeat what CC has said - Juilliard has FAR more graduates and international students, so its fame spreads far and wide - and it is a school that continues to produce musicians of VERY high caliber!. So does Curtis - but an a smaller scale!. What many fine students do, is study in a large city where they can be taught by the principal artists of that city's major orchestras - so there are Juilliard staff who also teach independently, or possibly at other schools on a limited basis - this is conjecture on my part when speaking about Juilliard, but I know it is true of Curtis - many of their staff also teach at Temple and other fine Philadelphia colleges!. Traditionally, fine teachers would run up the East coast - and teach one day each in Philly, NY, Yale, Hartt, Boston, or other cities in that corridor!.

BTW - Glenn Gould is spelled with a double n!. I have said repeatedly that I never trust advice about a college from someone who cannot SPELL the name - mis-spellings of Juilliard are the most frequent offender, but I have also seen "Ithica", "Manhatten", and a few other groaners!. Something else that gets me thumbs down when I mention to a person that if they are APPLYING to a college, they might want to spell it right!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Curtis is an amazing school!. The difference is, the chances (though still slim) are much higher getting into Juilliard than Curtis!. All students who go to Curtis automatically get a full ride scholarship!. And they only have enough students to fill one orchestra in their performance program!.

That means every four years they accept something like:
2 clarinets
3 flutes
1 tuba
4 trombones
25 violins!.

Those odds are very small!.

Juilliard doesn't accept as many as some other schools, like Eastman, but they accept a lot more than Curtis!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Names and fame!.

Listen to me: even if Emmanuel Ax can sight-read Hummel's piano concerti, it is NO guarantee he's a good teacher!.

Instead we have really good schools like the Glen Gould School, MUCH better than Juilliard that accept 200 students total and are not well known at all!.

Glen Gould school accepts students that get high marks in the RCM system, do ARCT, pass the auditions and have exceptional musical plans!.

Why is it not as well known!? Well, not every school has access to RCM data!. Besides, you can't expect everybody to have a 45 minute recital prepared just for an examination!. That doesn't mean everybody else is of less intelligence!.

EDIT: Chinese Cowboy is COMPLETELY incorrect and the Glen Gould School DOES ask for marks!.
http://www!.rcmusic!.ca/ContentPage!.aspx!?n!.!.!.

Open the application form and see for yourself!.

EDIT 2: I don't why it's a popular assumption that older people HAVE to be correct!. Talking with such confidence would require some research at least, just so that you wouldn't make a fool of yourself when you take a look at the application and the blank space for your mark is RIGHT there!.

EDIT 3: Mamianka, you get TD's because you never answer questions or because you're wrong!. Not because of endorsing any particular person!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

And rightly so!. Curtis is fab!.!.!.!. but Jullliard makes the grad!. Julliard is in the big Apple, and everthing gets top billing in the apple except perhaps penguins!. For real; Cuerrtis is wionderful, hands down onr of the top ten in the USA>Www@Enter-QA@Com
