Start with something simple, like remixing with Virtual DJ !. Learn about beats, sounds, loops, and editing!. Then, you can move on to a better program, like Cubase and Cakewalk or FL Studios 7!. Download/borrow/buy as many VSTs and VSTis as your hard drive will allow, and spend a week or four playing around with them in different host applications to learn what kind of composition seems right for you!. Then you can focus on the applications/effects that'll give you the sounds you're looking for!.

You will need a lot of tracks, loops, drums and effects!. Get the largest hard drive you can to store your music (i started with 320GB, i am now up to 2TB (terabytes)!.
