Flea plays a modulus

which is kinda pricey!. but to be honest the classic flea sound was always on a sting ray

on a budget an ibanez might give a similar sound!. most fenders (jazz/precision) would be too smooth but the jaguar http://www!.fender!.com/products//search!.p!.!.!. which I have has a huge range of sound or the gibson thunderbird would also offer a great option for the sound your after!. http://www!.thewho!.net/whotabs/equipment/!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Can't go wrong with a non-Squire Fender Bass!.

Here's the gear the dude apparently uses:

for an electric bass, I'd go with Dean, or fender, but thats just me!. I have a Dean Flying V bass, and 3 other guitars, but!.!.!. My friend has a crappy flea market bass, and it actually sounds pretty good in our band!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I'm not sure if Flea ever played a Bongo but I hear they're nothing but amazing! I've been having some major G!.A!.S!. for one of those for a long while now; they have an amazingly wide variety of tones available with the 4 band EQ as well as a lot of punch especially with the double humbucker models!. They also allow for some great facility on the finger board as the neck is very smooth and not too wide!. Great playability even with my tiny hands! One down fall (as long as you don't think they're butt-ugly): $$$!. So if you've got the money, go for it!

As listed above Flea's signature has long been the EBMM Sting Ray but he's also played a Modulus and I believe he's currently rockin' a sweet *** '61 Fender!.

My suggestion would be to go to a music store whether its an independent joint or a Guitar Center and sit down with a few of these instruments and give them a try!. What's good for one bassist (even your favorite bassist!) may not be what's right for you!. So play as many basses as you can get your hands on and decide for yourself what feels right and sounds right for you! I know, it's a pretty generic answer and the process will take some time and effort on your part, but if you're going to spend the money on bass it should be something that you enjoying playing and hearing played!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
