What exactly is alternative rock or alternative metal?!
Question: What exactly is alternative rock or alternative metal!?
From Wikipedia:
"The term "alternative" was coined in the 1980s to describe punk rock-inspired bands on independent record labels that did not fit into the mainstream genres of the time!."
"It is characterized by some heavy metal trappings (most notably heavy riffs), but usually with a pronounced experimental edge, including unconventional lyrics, odd time signatures, unusual technique, a resistance to conventional approaches to heavy music and an incorporation of a wide range of influences outside of the metal music scene!."
Does that basically mean "We have no idea what to call this but it's not unique enough for its own genre, so we're calling it alternative"!?

-Weezer
I usually count Nirvana too!. And really everything that is heavily influenced by punk and experimental, but isn't punk, is alternative!. So most grunge bands count, the Strokes count, The Hives count, most indie bands count!. Alternative rock is a very broad umbrella term, hell sometimes punk is classified as a subgenre of alternative, and anyone who puts a specific sound or credo to the term "alternative" is just telling you what they consider to be part of the genre!. It really is just stuff that isn't quite straight forward rock 'n' roll and not quite punk!. If it doesn't fit in any other labels you cram it into the alternative section!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I always thought of alternative as softer and more coffeehouse type!. Like the later works of RHCP and some Foo Fighters music!. You know, bands like Incubus!.

I think bands who are considered alternative have a lot of variety in their music!. Like alternative rock will mainly be rock, but they'll also blend in different genres of music into the mix!.
