My preferred settings are, in general, about 60% gain, 40% bass, 50% mids, and 70% treble!.

Start with all knobs at 50%!. In order of treble, mids, bass, gain, then back to treble, turn each knob up all the way, then turn it down slowly until it sounds the way you want to!. Doing this gives you a good idea what the amp is capable of!.

I am not a fan of cutting mids!.!.!. if I do, I prefer to use a graphic or parametric EQ so I can cut just what I need and no more!. Cutting mids cuts volume, so if you're playing in a band or recording doing that basically just means you just disappear in the mix!. If you're playing solo, especially if you have to be relatively quiet, I guess it's not such a bad thing!. But keep in mind that if you ever play with other people you won't be able to hear yourself well until you turn your mids back up a bit!. Cutting bass when playing with others helps, too, as guitar's bass frequencies make a lot of mud for the bass guitar and drums!.

I should probably mention that volume changes the way you hear things!.!.!. EQ volumes that work at low volumes will not necessarily work at higher volumes!. This problem is more pronounced with larger amps and larger volumes, but even holds to some extent for practice amps!.

Having hot pickups, adding some form of eq (eq pedal, rackmount eq), and getting a better cab are all good ways of improving your tone!.

My buddy usually plays his Marshall through two cabs, a 120w Marshall w/Celestions and a beefy Peavey cab, 300w I think!. I let him borrow my Marshall 1960a 300w cab, and it blew him away - he sounded way beefier and aggressive, it was much, much louder, etc!. It's just like I told him - it's the difference that a pro-quality piece of equipment makes!. The 1960 cab is used widely, you've heard it on many popular rock albums and on at least a third of the live bands I've ever seen!.

Anyways, it was funny to hear the surprise in his voice!.!.!. =)

generally, the "metallica" sound is achieved by turning up the bass and treble and turning down the mids!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
