Is my guitar teacher teaching me the right things?!

Question: Is my guitar teacher teaching me the right things!?
I've been playing the guitar for 2 and a half years and I had a teacher before my current teacher who bailed on me!. She was a woman and she taught me a few things for about 2 months but after awhile she stopped teaching me cuz she moved!.

My current teacher has been teaching me for 2 years and doesn't put focus on notes, but on tabs!. He teaches me through songs and the scales he gives me are in tabs!. He plays mostly rock songs and a few classical songs and is really good!.!.!. bu the doesn't teach me clasical songs!.

He sort of forgets what he tells me the last week!.

What are the basics that I should have known by now and what should I do if he's not doing a good job!?

I don't wanna hurt his feelings and insult him!.!.!.

Please help me so that I can become a good guitar player!!!

Oh yes, I also need suggestions on how often to practice!.!.!.
I practice 2 hours every 4 days now!.!.!.

Well, first of all, it depends on your learning speed!. He probably is teaching you the right things, as the best way to learn is really to play other pieces of music, giving you a well rounded and experianced ability for guitar!.

Whether or not to play actualy sheet music or tabs depends on your ability to read sheet music, and the style you play!. If you can already read it at at least a moderate level, and prefer to play more classical music (or just music that is generally noted down with sheet music) then I would say mention it to him!. One reason for it might be that he can't read sheet music too well though!.

If you prefer more popular music, or rock like you said he likes, then tabs would be the best and easiest way to learn!. also if you can't read sheet music already then I would stick to tabs, because it really is way simpler and easier to understand!.

By now you should probably know a few things, like the main open chords, aswell as the A and E shapes of barre chords with major, minor etc!. and maybe some scales too!. (I can't be sure though, as i never had proper instruction)!.

If he forgets, don't be afraid to remind him, he probably has many students and can't keep track!.

And finally, with the practicing, I wouldn't stick to playing 2 hours a night, or any rigid schedule!. As far as i'm concerned it should be easy and fun!.

To be honest every four days probably isn't enough to progress rapidly, so you could just do like an hour a night or even half an hour!. Just spread it out!.

You could sit and play for a while, and if you get bored, just whack on the TV and play softly over it!.

also, I would learn songs that relate to the lessons e!.g!. if you're learning barre chords, play a song with various barre chords and lots of changes in between!.

sorry about the essay!.

I teach 20 guitar students a week, and have a professional career of 36 yrs!. Tab is good for some things, but I stress the need to learn notation!. C treble clef for guitar is also voice, piano, flute, violin, many others, tab is good for guitar, period!. Many of my students perfer notation in case they want to do something besides guitar in the future!. In school, I was taught to practice this way, concentrate on something for 20 mins!., get up and walk around for 5 or 10, repeat!. Practice at the same time everyday, and keep your guitar on a stand out and available in case you have an extra 5-10 minutes, or want to remind yourself of something!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
