Answers:
It's a synthesizer supposedly programmed by Alan Parsons (who incidentally was the recording engineer on the Beatles "Abbey Road" album and Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon")!.

Research correction from Wikipedia:

The song's iconic backing track was derived from deep within the Lifehouse concept!. Townshend wanted to input the life information of Meher Baba into a synthesizer, which would then generate music based on that information!. That music would have been the backing track for "Baba O'Riley," but in the end, the frenetic sequence was played by Townshend on a Lowrey Berkshire Deluxe TBO-1 organ using its marimba repeat feature!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

That's funny! I heard this on the radio and I was like wow this is a catchy mix! THANK YOU for posting the name and link because I was dying to find this song LOL, also It's a synthesizer, not a guitar, at first I THOUGHT it was but, realized it wasn't!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
